What is the Year 2000 Problem?

In the early days of computing, memory was expensive such that software developers stored dates using two-digit years (e.g.1998 was stored as 98) to save memory. Most business applications written over the last 30 years used this standard and, unless corrected, 01/01/00 may be recognized as the first day of 1900 and not January 1, 2000. This is a problem that may exist for mainframe, midrange, and personal computers alike. As 2000 approaches, therefore, many enterprises face the challenge of ensuring that their information technology resources will continue to function properly.
